Sophomore pitcher Jack Vasquez threw his second consecutive no-hitter as the Rattler offense put 10 runs on the East Central defense for a 10-0 win over the Hornets.
Vasquez pitched six innings, allowing no hits, no runs, five walks and striking out 10 batters.
The win improves San Marcos’ record to 9-5-1 overall and 2-2 in district play.
Being held scoreless through the first three innings, the Rattlers got their chance to strike. Facing runners on first and second with one out, Vasquez connected with an RBI single in right field to put the Rattlers up 1-0.
The bases were then loaded up after a hit by pitch before a strikeout gave San Marcos two outs. Jyuan Alonso forced a bases loaded walk to put another run for the Rattlers now leading 2-0. Nate Velasquez then scored on a passed ball before Cole Wiatrek hit a grounder towards the shortstop. However the Hornets committed a fielding er- ror, allowing two more runs to come across, extending the Rattler lead to 5-0.
In the top of the fifth inning, San Marcos added on to their lead. With the bases loaded, Colson Geesee hit into the fielder’s choice to score another run. Mason Gamboa followed up with a two-run RBI single, putting the Rattlers up 8-0.
Later in the top of the sixth inning, the Rattlers scored two more runs on a passed ball to go up 10-0.
Vasquez closed out the game in the bottom of the sixth by striking out all three batters.
San Marcos returns home Friday to complete their two game series with East Central. First pitch is set for 7 p.m.
