Texas State scored six runs in the first innings en route to a 6-4 over the App State Mountaineers to complete the three-game sweep.
The Bobcats and Head Coach Ricci Woodard improve their record to 18-6 overall and 3-0 in conference play.
“We just talked about weekends being kind of the grit (needed) on Sundays and having to dig in and go,” Woodard said. “I like the way we came out. We were just able to hold on and keep fighting, which is what Sundays are always gonna be about for us.”
The Bobcats struck first in the first inning when junior designated player Karmyn Bass hit a sacrifice fly in right field to score one run.
Later in the at-bat, senior left fielder Ciara Trahan connected with an RBI single towards left field, scoring another run and putting the Bobcats up 2-0.
Junior catcher Megan Kelnar followed Trahan with an RBI single of her own, extending the lead to 3-0.
Trahan later scored on a wild pitch, putting the Bobcats up 4-0.
App State answered back in the second inning with a solo home run only for Texas State to respond.
Junior center fielder Keely Williams hit another Bobcat sacrifice fly to push the lead up 5-1.
Later in the at-bat, freshman right fielder Bailee Slack stole home on the Texas State double steal attempt, extending the lead to 6-1.
“That's big,” Woodard said. “You can tell (App State wasn’t) going to die down either, so if you can set the tone early on Sundays, you have a better chance to win the game.”
App State had three unanswered runs on a two-run RBI single and a Bobcat throwing error but it wasn’t enough to make the comeback, sealing the Texas State victory.
The Bobcats are back home Wednesday against Wichita State. First pitch is for 5 p.m.
