Bobcats fall to Bradley to close out tournament

The Bobcat offense struggled to get off the ground, falling to the Bradley Braves 7-3.

Head Coach Ricci Woodard noted the need for the offense to improve and not putting the pressure on the pitching staff.

“We can't [have] one hit through five innings against a team in your fourth game of the weekend,” Woodard said. “Our pitching is going to keep us in the ball game and that’s not fair to them. We have to do a better job at the plate.”

While she thought the offense improved in some aspects of the game, Woodard still sees the need for improvement.

“We did a better job tonight with our pitch selection,” Woodard said. “But we're just not barreling up the balls and we gotta do a better job of that. The ones we did barrel up, we hit it right at people and there’s not much you could do there. But they have to be able to handle the day to day grind of the game.”

Bradley struck first in the second inning with a sacrifice fly in the left field to take an early 1-0 lead.

The Braves later scored on a two-run RBI single in the third inning, extending the Bobcat deficit to 3-0.

Bradley added another score in the fourth inning on a RBI single.

Texas State responded in the bottom of the sixth inning. After junior Karmyn Bass forced a leadoff walk then advanced to second on the fielder’s choice, junior Keely Williams scored Bass on the RBI single, cutting the lead down to 4-1.

The Bobcats later loaded up the bases, allowing freshman Mayson Garrett to force a bases loaded walk, making it a 4-2 game.

Unfortunately for Texas State, the Bobcats left the bases loaded to end the inning.

Bradley added three more runs in the seventh inning, extending the Bobcat deficit to 7-2.

Texas State made one last attempt to stage a miracle comeback win in the seventh inning.

The Bobcats loaded up bases, allowing senior Ciara Trahan to hit a RBI single down the left field line, making it a 7-3 game.

But Texas State was unable to bring home any more runs and left the bases loaded once again to seal their 7-3 defeat.

Texas State will be back home this weekend for the Bobcat Tournament. The Bobcats will open the tournament Thursday against former conference foe Stephen F. Austin.
