Competence needed at the federal level

LETTER TO THE EDITOR

The NFL post season games and the senate confirmation hearings happening at the same time offers an opportunity for an interesting comparison.

Every player on every team in the NFL has earned his spot on the team by a display of skill, competence, dependability and success over many years and in various situations. His position has been earned, not given, because of his family name, his family wealth, his religion, his political views or financial contributions.

Compare that with many of the nominees for high government positions now being considered by the senate. Shouldn’t our government officials be at least as competent at their job as is every NFL rookie?

Every senator who votes in favor of confirming an unprepared, incompetent individual for a high government post is responsible when the inevitable catastrophe occurs. Remember Hurricane Katrina and “Brownie”?

Such senators need to be “fired” the next time they run for re-election. Unless we, the voters, act, we share responsibility for whatever happens.
