GARY JOB CORPS
Gary Job Corps partners with organizations across Hays and Caldwell counties, providing manpower while the partners provide quality on-the-job training for its students. During the most recent community luncheon, GJC honored those partners that have gone above and beyond for its students and provided a chance for the students to talk about how these internships have changed their lives.
Chris Roff, GJC deputy center director, wanted to thank the community partners for their continued support and also show off the newly made awards.
“Today’s meeting, specifically, is about honoring you guys and honoring the community,” Roff said, adding that the awards were a product of the hard work of GJC students. “We have some pretty cool awards to give out.”
TexanCare Family Medicine received an Employer of the Year award. Other employers honored with GJC awards were Pharmacy Care USA of San Marcos, Salvation Army, Chisolm Trail Nursing & Rehab Center, Ted Breihan Electric Company, Southside Community Center and Roadway Striping Inc.
GJC Student Hailey Lane had been working with TexanCare Family Medicine.
“I checked in patients. I checked out patients. I collected their co-pay. I answered the telephone,” Lane explained, adding that there were many other daily tasks she was required to complete. “I really enjoyed it.”
Jacqulynn Davila-Hernandez is a Human Services student at GJC. She said she was looking forward to starting workbased learning shortly; she will be working at the Southside Community Center.
“I’m excited to start there and be able to put what I’ve learned about my trade to use,” Davila- Hernandez said.
Carlos Sandoval has done his onsite learning through Ted Breihan Electric Co.
“I got a lot of handson experience,” Sandoval said. “Ted Breihan, he’s very well known throughout the community, so I’m very honored [to have worked for his company]. Thank you guys for assisting me, and it was very interesting and very fun.”
Lou Berry spoke during the presentation given by the Corrections Center Cadets; Other cadets in attendance and a part of the presentation were Jesus Juarez, Lauren Young and Shayden Henson.
“Our academy is the Kristian Menchaca Cadet Academy. This is him right here. He was a security student here on campus back in 2006. He joined the army, and unfortunately, passed away during service,” Berry said. “A lot of our details are on [Texas State] University grounds, where there is no smoking and no drinking. So if we see it, we can shut it down quickly and respectfully. We help the local PD with any matters that we can deal with.”
