Yearly January sales tax allocations down almost 4%

OFFICE OF THE STATE COMPTROLLER

San Marcos has received $131,340 less for 2025 year to date, as compared to 2024, but that doesn’t paint a clear picture of where the economy stands for this year as the data is only based on sales for a one month period.

The sales tax rate allocation given by the Office of the State Comptroller for the city of San Marcos is 1.5%.

The sales tax allocation for January, representing sales made in November in San Marcos, has gone down 3.87% compared to the same month last year.

The amount allocated to the city for sales made in November is $3,258,623 down from $3,389,963 for the same period in the previous year.

The amount of allocations for the entire year to date, which is the same as the net payment for this period in the first month of the year, is down 3.87% from last year.

Year to date, the city received a total of $3,258,623 in allocations, and year to date for 2024 was $3,389,963.

The tax rate allocation for unincorporated Hays County is 0.5%. The allocation for January, representing sales made in November for the county, is $2,725,040, which is down 0.04% from last year in the same period last year when it received $2,726,138. The payment to the county year to date, which is the same as the net payment for this period in the first month of the year, is $2,725,040, which is down 0.04% from last year.

In 2024, Hays County received $2,726,138 for the year by this time.

Six of the cities in Hays County — except Kyle, Mountain City, Niederwald, and Wimberley — are down from last year for this tax allocation period, and due to it being the first month of the year, the same cities are down for the year to date allocations.

Here’s how the rest of the county’s municipalities fared:

• Buda: Monthly allocation is $1,060,948, down 0.19%. Year to date total is the same.
