The Lady Rattlers rolled to their fifth straight win with an 80-33 dismantling of Schertz Clemens as San Marcos senior Ezra Tobias celebrated 1,000 career points.
“I’m proud of the way that they played,” said San Marcos head coach Cooper Haralson. “It doesn’t matter who you’re playing, it’s just about how you played, and I think we did a really good job tonight.”
San Marcos came out of the gates hot, after Clemens converted a layup to make the game 8-4 in the first, the Lady Rattlers dominated the rest of the quarter going on a 24-1 run to lead 32-5.
Junior Azariah Fennell led the way for the Lady Rattlers with 12 points in the first quarter alone.
The Lady Rattlers continued their dominance in the second quarter, with more steals converted into easy points. San Marcos ended the quarter on a 6-0 run to take a 44-13 lead into halftime.
During halftime, San Marcos took a moment to celebrate senior guard Ezra Tobias, who reached 1,000 career points on Wednesday on the road against Buda Johnson.
“I’m very grateful,” said Tobias. “All the hard work that I put in at the gym - the time, the effort, the sweat, the tears, - it’s just finally paying off. For my community to come out and show support, it’s a very good feeling.”
“It’s obviously a big deal,” said Haralson. “It’s a big accomplishment for her, but she’s had such a big impact. Not just herself on the court, but on her teammates and how they play the game of basketball. We feed off of her and her energy, and I’m extremely proud of her because she’s absolutely earned it.”
Even with the large lead, the Lady Rattlers remained focused on Clemens as they led 65-27 after the third quarter.
“The third quarter is our best quarter every game we play,” said junior Azariah Fennell. “So we knew we had to come out with a lot of energy because we knew Clemens was going to come out with a lot of energy, especially coming into the second half.”
The Lady Rattlers finished the job in the fourth quarter, holding Clemens to just six points to win 80-33, maintaining their perfect record at home this season.
San Marcos will travel to play East Central, a team that they beat 62-36 earlier in the season.
“They’re fighting to get up a little bit higher in the standings and set themselves up a little bit better going into the playoffs,” said Haralson. “We’ve just got to go in prepared, and take it one game at a time.”
The Lady Rattlers will take on East Central on the road on Tuesday.
