The Hays County Commissioners Court proclaimed January 20, 2025 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
“The people of the United States will observe the federal holiday honoring Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. on January 20, 2025 to celebrate the birthday of this significant civil rights leader who inspired profound and lasting change in our nation,” the proclamation stated. “Local, state and national organizations will remember this great man by living the theme of the 2025 holiday: Labor, Jobs, & Freedom. We have chosen this theme to highlight the purpose of the 1963 March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom. The March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom is remembered as the moment when Dr. King delivered his famous, ‘I Have a Dream Speech,’ which is based on the activism of A. Phillip Randolph’s campaign for fair treatment and equal employment opportunities for Black people.”
The proclamation stated that the people of Hays County and San Marcos host annual celebrations to honor the life and contributions of MLK Jr. to the world.
“The Dunbar Heritage Association is inviting the public to observe the holiday from January 18 through the 20, in honor of the 23rd anniversary of hosting the celebration and in honor of Dr. King’s 96th birthday,” the proclamation stated. “The celebration will begin with the DHA MLK Kids’ Event on Saturday, Jan. 18, from 10:30 am to 1:30 pm at the San Marcos Public Library. Then on Monday, Jan. 20, the holiday commemoration starts at the LBJ/ MLK Crossroads with the DHA Wreath-laying at 9:30 a.m., followed by the 23nd annual MLK Walk, a program at the Hays County Courthouse and a reception at the Paul Laurence Dunbar Recreation Center.”
The court encouraged all Americans to fulfill MLK Jr.’s vision of freedom, equality and opportunity for all. The court called upon the citizens of Hays County to “honor the memory of Martin Luther King, Jr. and to participate in local observances that commemorate his important contributions to our nation.”
