Ribbon cutting scheduled for Blanco Gardens drainage improvements

The city of San Marcos will celebrate the substantial completion of the Blanco Gardens Drainage Improvements with a ribbon cutting Tuesday, January 14 at 9 a.m. at the intersection of River Road and Cape Street. The public is invited to attend the event, which will include remarks from Mayor Hughson and an overview of the project’s improvements presented by city staff.

The Blanco Gardens Drainage Improvements were initiated in response to the Memorial Day and All Saints floods of 2015, which had devastating impacts on the San Marcos community. Through federal support from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, the city of San Marcos secured a total of $15 million in funding from Community Development Block Grant Disaster Recovery and Mitigation programs.

The project focused on reducing the impact of future flooding events for the Blanco Gardens neighborhood and surrounding areas. Key features include a new storm sewer system, inlets and concrete channels to manage major flood events more effectively.
