Broke Thespians reimagine a Shakespearean classic
Broke Thespians Theatre Company is set to kick off their highly-anticipated 2025 Season with a modern retelling of William Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream.
Directed by Summer Jones, this version of A Midsummer Night’s Dream captures all the excitement and drama of a fast-paced dating reality show. Think petty arguments, flirtatious encounters and heart-thumping twists as Shakespeare’s iconic characters navigate love triangles, betrayals and romantic misadventures, all while under the influence of a playful fairy world. Set against a backdrop of vibrant colors, flashing lights and social media-inspired aesthetics, this reimagining brings the magic of the forest and the chaos of the Athenian lovers into the age of Instagram and reality TV.
“A Midsummer Night’s Dream is a laughter filled, well-loved classic. Shakespeare gives us young love in a parody of himself,” Summer Jones, the production’s director, said. “Looking from the modern audience’s perspective, we see familiar tropes from the world of reality television. Crude personalities, unrequit- ed love and raucous arguments all come together with some fairy magic in this twist of Shakespeare’s classic. Paths cross, cross over again, tangle all in the wrong ways, and you can’t help but wonder how they’ll end up!”

This timeless comedy, filled with romance, mischief and magical transformation, will open on Jan. 31 at the Maurice T. Suttles VFW, running through Feb. 9. Tickets are $15 and can be purchased online atbrokethespianstheatre-company. org/shows/ tickets or at the door.
