The DHA hosts 2025 MLK march and celebration

DUNBAR HERITAGE ASSOCIATION

Martin Luther King Jr. Day, celebrated on the third Monday in January, is a federal holiday that honors the birth and legacy of civil rights leader and Baptist minister Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The Dunbar Heritage Association will be hosting a two-day MLK Day celebration in honor of Dr. King. The first is an MLK Kid’s event, which will be celebrated from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Jan. 18 at the San Marcos Public Library. The second will occur starting at 9:30 a.m. on Jan. 20, MLK Jr. Day, at the intersection of LBJ Drive and MLK Drive, the location of the Crossroads Memorial.

The MLK Kids’ Event is a celebration just for children ages 3 to 18 filled with engaging activities, games and arts and crafts aimed at teaching youth about Dr. King’s legacy. MLK March/Walk and Celebration Day will begin with a wreath laying ceremony at 9:30 a.m. at the Crossroads Memorial. Immediately after the ceremony, there will be a silent march/walk through the Historic Dunbar neighborhood to the Historic Hays County Courthouse, located at 111 E. San Antonio Street, where a brief program will take place.

Reception will occur following the program at the Dunbar Recreation Center, located at 801 MLK Drive, which will involve free food and music.

The Dunbar Heritage Association was founded in 1999, by a local historian, community builder and activist, Harvey Miller. The mission of the Dunbar Heritage Association is to maintain the cultural preservation of the historically Black Dunbar neighborhood through social practices, traditions, rituals, knowledge, spiritual beliefs, language and artistic expression. We are the 21year host of the annual MLK Day March and Celebration in San Marcos.
