WHAT’S HAPPENING THIS WEEKEND?

The San Marcos Daily Record staff gives recommendations on what to do in our community

NATIVE PLANTS AND BUBBLY BEVERAGES

What better way to start out the New Year than with new plants, native ones at that! From 10 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Ecosystem Regeneration Artisans, located at 946 Boulder Bluff, will be hosting a Native Plant sale and giving out free Mimosas to ring in the New Year — the drink, not the plant. Must be over 21 to have a drink and the limit is two per person, so you can still load up your plants and drive home. Their tree yard is open to the public, and you can plant them in Central Texas until March 15. Please sign up for the sale at https://www.signupgenius.com/go/10C0B4AAAA92CA6F5C52-54093787-free?. Each sign up slot includes every person in your group, so carpool up to the ERA and enjoy all of their beautiful offerings. I think I might see if they have a Firecracker as mine’s light died out in the last freeze.

STAYING UP FOR THE STARS

Though my husband’s birthday was in November, we are celebrating this weekend with an eight-hour road trip to West Texas to watch the Quatranid Meteor Shower from a bubble tent in Terlingua. Bubble Terlingua is a one-of-a-kind adventure for campers and stargazers alike. Each tent is an inflatable plastic bubble with a full panorama of the wide Texas sky. They also have wifi, an indoor shower, a fire pit and a hot tub. In fact, it’s such a unique experience, we had to book our stay nine months in advance. The Quatranids will run from Dec. 26, 2024 to Jan. 16, 2025, peaking into the early morning hours of Jan. 3. My husband has never been to West Texas, so I think he’s definitely going to discover how true it is that the stars at night are big and bright, deep in the heart of Texas.

NEW YEAR, NEW MEETUPS

Start the year off right with new friends and new photos at the first meet up of the year for the San Marcos Photo Friends. The club meets today at 10:00 a.m. at Lago Vista Film Lab at 225 N CM Allen Pkwy. Everyone is welcome and they are encouraging club members to bring a friend, human or pet to join the photo walk. Photographers of all skill levels will be there to share their camera knowledge and shooting tips. No camera is required to join the Photo Friends, they embrace videography, drawing, or just community members interested in meeting people interested in photography.

Let your voice be heard this Saturday at Triple Six Social’s Scary-Oke. The gothic cafe is hosting their first karaoke of the year. In addition to the scary serenades there will be free mocktails for sampling. The cafe is about to roll out new mocktails and need practice testing out the connections so BYOB is encouraged if you want to un-mock your beverage. The cafe has coffees, matchas, teas, and a food menu so there’s sure to be the perfect beverage to wet your whistle as you take the mic and belt out some tunes!
