LOCO FOR BOKO’S

TEXAS STATE UNIVERSITY

Chartwells hosts Late Night Breakfast at TXST

Texas State Dining — powered by Chartwells Higher Education — hosted a bumping Late-Night Breakfast, as a grand finale to its First Year Eats initiative for the fall semester. Over 2,500 students came to chow down and have fun before their finals from 10 p.m. to midnight on Dec. 5. Students indulged in their breakfast favorites, danced, and made the most of this biannual tradition.

“The minute the doors opened the students were on the floor dancing,” Resident District Manager Chin-Hong Chua said. “The deejay knew exactly what music to play to get them moving. Any open space was used for dancing.”

Anticipation was high as students began lining up more than an hour before the doors opened to get one of 1,000 commemorative t-shirts, which were snatched up within minutes. The shirts have become collectibles with a different design for each semester’s Late Night Breakfast. This was the fifth LNB, each with a shirt and pin to commemorate the occasion. Students also had a chance to win a one-of-a-kind cereal box featuring the school mascot Boko, an exclusive keychain with the face of University President Kelly Damphousse, a Late Night Breakfast t-shirt and a commemorative pin.

“Late Night Breakfast is always a popular event, but the giveaways and chance at the cereal box and keychain really helped to build excitement and boost attendance,” Director of Marketing and Guest Experience Whitney Villarreal said. “Also, President Damphousse is a popular icon for our students so having him and Boko in attendance was amazing. It was a great event.”

She and Chua said the success is due to a great partnership with the Department of Housing and Resident Life, LBJ Student Center staff and student involvement. Also, online hype among participants and a larger student population helped push attendance well past last fall’s figure of 1,800.

Chua said the Texas State Dining team expects the spring Late Night Breakfast crowd to be bigger as it usually surpasses fall attendance. Last spring, LNB drew over 2,600. The team is already preparing for next fall’s theme and planning maroon pancakes and donuts to match school colors.
