The Dunbar Heritage Association will host its annual Pre-Kwanzaa celebration on Saturday, Dec. 21 from 1 to 4 p.m. at the San Marcos Public Library.
Kwanzaa is a nonreligious holiday focusing on seven principles associated with family, community and culture. Modeled after the first harvest celebrations in Africa, the word Kwanzaa derives meaning from the Swahili phrase “matunda ya kwanza,” meaning “first fruits” of the harvest. The annual celebration takes place Dec. 26 through Jan. 1, 2025.
The event at the library will feature make-andtake arts tables, interactive drumming, free food and performances by local dancers and musicians, all in the spirit of learning more about the holiday while celebrating the community.
Come learn about this African-American holiday tradition while participating in Kwanzaa centered activities. This event is open to the public. For more information, visit the Dunbar Heritage Associate website at dhasmtx.come or visit the event’s Facebook page under facebook.com/dunbarheritage.
