Texans battle La Vega for trip to AT&T
Wimberley will play for a state championship game berth and an opportunity to play under bright lights of AT&T Stadium when the Texans battle the Waco La Vega Pirates.
The Texans enter the game with a 12-2 record while the Pirates enter the game with a 11-3 record.
La Vega is coming off a 48-30 win over the Sealy Tigers in the Region III final. The Pirates won the district championship in District 12 4A Division II despite a non-district record of 2-3 with losses to Celina, West Orange Stark and Stephenville.
The Pirates are led by senior running back Bryson Roland. Roland has rushed for 1,856 yards on 199 carries and 27 touchdowns. Roland has also caught 28 passes for 374 yards and six touchdowns.
Senior Rya’Quan Kennedy is second in rushing with 66 carries for 506 yards and five touchdowns.
In the passing game, sophomore quarterback Kourtney Parr has led the way for the Pirates, passing for 1,813 yards and 15 touchdowns. Parr’s main target is wide receiver Jabaric Thorton who leads the team with 70 catches for 1,203 yards and 13 touchdowns.
On defense, Caden Roland leads the team in total tackles with 136 along with 50 solo tackles. Brydrick Scott is second with 114 total tackles and 44 solo tackles.
This will be the first ever meeting between Wimberley and La Vega.
The Texans have made 10 state semifinal appearances since starting the football program back in 1986.
The first came in 1993 after defeating Freer 17-0 to win their first regional title in program history. The Texans fell short of the state championship game, losing to Paul Pewitt 37-35.
Wimberley did not return to the state semifinals until 2005 where the Texans entered the game at 13-0. Wimberley defeated West Orange Stark 52-29 for the Texans first appearance in the state title game before beating Gainsville 21-7 to capture the state title.
The Texans made back to back appearances in the state semifinals during the 2010 and 2011 seasons, the latter seeing Wimberley win their second state championship.
Since 2017, the Texans have qualified for state semifinals six out of the last eight seasons.
Kickoff for Wimberley- La Vega is set for 7 p.m. tonight at Georgetown ISD Stadium.
