DEDICATED TO NURTURING: Katie Newby’s mission to support new mothers

In a society where postpartum support is often overlooked, Katie Newby, founder of Newby Nurturing, is redefining the standard for maternal and infant care. With 15 years of experience as a licensed nurse, certified breastfeeding specialist and postpartum doula, Katie has guided more than 2,000 families through the transformative journey of early parenthood.

Her dedication to caregiving started young. As the oldest of three siblings and 11 cousins, she became a certified babysitter at the age of 12 and found her first job as an infant caregiver at 16. Her nurturing instincts were further honed during her time as a live-in nanny in Japan while raising her first child. It was there she realized the vital role of a support system in helping new mothers navigate the challenges of parenthood.

In 2014, Katie discovered the role of a postpartum doula and knew she had found her calling. “Doula work found me,” she reflected. Since then, she has become a certified breastfeeding specialist and is pursuing International Board-Certified Lactation Consultant credentials to deepen her impact on maternal and infant health.

Katie’s work extends beyond one-on-one care. She spearheads the Hays County Birthworker and San Marcos Breastfeeding Coalition meetings, aiming to connect birthworkers, lactation consultants and advocates to better support families in the region. She emphasizes the importance of community support in breastfeeding success, citing a favorite quote from anthropologist Dana Raphael: “Her very presence gives the mother a better chance of remaining calm and nursing her baby.”

Her expertise has been a lifeline for mothers facing common breastfeeding challenges, such as latch issues, pain or concerns about milk supply. Katie provides hands-on guidance, reassures mothers and offers practical solutions to help them meet their goals. Her approach emphasizes listening and instilling confidence, ensuring mothers feel heard and supported.

Balancing her work as a school nurse and her passion for postpartum care, Katie continues to find fulfillment in helping families thrive. From teaching free prenatal breastfeeding classes to hosting support groups, she remains committed to empowering mothers.

“My goal is always to leave a mother feeling supported and heard,” Katie says. “Every mom deserves to feel supported. You don’t have to do this alone and you shouldn’t have to.”

With her unwavering dedication and compassionate approach, Katie Newby is not just supporting new families — she’s building a community where every mother can find the help she needs to navigate the beautiful, challenging journey of motherhood.
