Bobcats defeat UTRGV in bounce back win

Texas State notched their second road win of the season, beating the UT-Rio Grande Valley Vaqueros 68-59.

The Bobcats improved their record to 3-3 overall.

Texas State jumped out to a 10-4 lead over the Vaqueros in the first quarter capped off by a made jumper from freshman point guard Saniya Burke.

The Bobcats continued to dominate UTRGV, going into the second quarter up 18-9.

UTRGV opened the second quarter on a 11-3 run to cut the Bobcats lead down to one point at 21-20.

But Texas State answered back with a 8-2 run to extend their lead to 29-22, ending with a layup by senior forward Jaylin Foster.

UTRGV ended the second quarter with a 5-0 run but the Bobcats maintained their lead at 29-27.

Texas State opened the third quarter on a 9-2, extending their lead to 38-29. Following a threepoint made by sophomore guard Ja’Mia Harris, the Bobcats extended their lead to their largest deficit at 49-38.

In the fourth quarter, UTRGV cut the Bobcats lead down to one point at 54-53. However, a three-pointer made by senior guard Crystal Smith gave Texas State breathing room at 57-53.

The Vaqueros were unable to complete the comeback as Texas State defeated the UTRGV 68-59.

Harris and senior guard Destiny Terrell tied in scoring with a team high 13 points apiece. Smith, senior forward Morgan Hill and sophomore guard Taleiyah Gibbs were tied for second in scoring with eight points. Foster and Burke were third in scoring with seven points.

Foster led the team in rebounds with 12.

Texas State returns to play Wednesday in a road showdown with the Tarleton State Texans. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m.
