Damphousse highlighted the intentional approach to collaboration. For example, he said the improvement in coordination for Texas State’s fall 2024 move-in day. In partnership with the city and local law enforcement, the university made logistical changes to reduce traffic congestion, benefiting both residents and businesses. A local business owner praised the smoother process, pointing to the positive economic impact on the community.

Looking forward, Damphousse envisions a dynamic partnership between the university and San Marcos. Texas State plans to grow its student population through on-campus programs, as well as at its Round Rock campus, online and in partnership with community colleges statewide. This growth aligns with Texas State’s aspirations to become a research university, which will bring more researchers, high-tech businesses and economic opportunities to the city.

The president emphasized the importance of managing growth to complement the city’s infrastructure and maintain its quality of life. He described the university’s role in fostering a vibrant local economy through student and employee patronage of local establishments.

Reflecting on being named Citizen of the Year in San Marcos, Damphousse expressed deep gratitude. He drew inspiration from past recipients, such as John Navarrette and Stephanie Reyes, who are celebrated for their dedication to the community. Damphousse credited others, including his wife Beth, for their collective efforts in making a difference.

“This honor reflects a lot of the teamwork and support from my wife and the senior leadership at Texas State,” he said.
