LOCAL STORIES
For Carrie Lynn Welty, a 65-year-old retired teacher, moving from Shiner to Wimberley has been nothing short of a dream come true. Nestled in the Hill Country, Wimberley offers more than just proximity to her loved ones — it’s a place she calls magical.
“I moved here to be closer to my partner, JR, who lives in Canyon Lake, and my son, Jordan, in San Marcos. Now, I’m right in the middle of the two, only 30 minutes away from each,” Welty said. “Being here affords us a healthier, happier life together.”
Beyond family ties, Wimberley holds a deep personal appeal for Welty.
“The first time I visited, I thought it was the most magical place. To have the opportunity to live here is beyond my dreams,” she shared. “The hills, which feel like mountains to me, the clear rivers and the vibrant outdoor life — it all calls to me.”
Welty, who spent her career as an elementary school teacher, looks forward to contributing to her new community.
“I’d love to mentor new teachers and help them thrive. It’s so important that educators have the tools they need to succeed, and that, in turn, helps the whole community,” she said.
Her enthusiasm for Wimberley extends to its unique character.
“I’m not a big shopper, but the local shops are so charming and individual — not commercialized at all,” Welty said. “The food is amazing, and the people are incredibly welcoming. Everywhere I go, I meet people who love it here as much as I do.”
Wimberley’s sense of connection stands out for Welty, but so does its commitment to preserving natural beauty.
“It’s a Dark Skies community, which means lights are kept off at night so we can see the stars. It’s breathtaking,” she said. “The wildlife here, especially the deer, are a joy to watch. They’re so healthy and at home — it feels like I’ve moved into their neighborhood.”
Though Wimberley’s charm doesn’t come cheap, Welty insists it’s worth it.
“It’s expensive, but you pay for what you get,” she said. “Wimberley is magical, like stepping into a movie set. I wish everyone could experience it.”
For Carrie Lynn Welty, her new chapter in Wimberley is about more than just a change of scenery. It’s about embracing a life filled with natural beauty, community spirit and treasured connections with those she loves most.
“This is the most wonderful place I’ve ever lived,” she said. “I don’t know what I did to deserve it, but I’m so grateful.”
