Head Coach G.J. Kinne and Texas State are in the process of finalizing a new seven-year contract that will make Kinne the highest paid coach in the Sun Belt Conference.
The announcement was first reported by Pete Thamel of ESPN.
The contract runs through 2031 where Kinne will be paid $14 million through seven years, averaging $2 million per year. The contract has already been approved by the Texas State University Board of Regents meeting last Thursday.
In his first season at Texas State in 2023, Kinne helped lead the Bobcats to a 7-5 record for their first winning season since 2014. In his first game as head coach, Kinne and the Bobcats defeated Baylor for Texas State’s first ever win against a Power Five school.
The Bobcats qualified for their first ever bowl, being invited to the First Responder Bowl where Texas State met the Rice Owls. Texas State later defeated Rice 45-21 for the program’s first ever bowl win and finished the season with an 8-5 record, the first time the Bobcats won eight games in a season since 2008.
In his second season at Texas State, the Bobcats notched their first ever win over the archrival UTSA Roadrunners in a 49-10 victory. The win was the largest blowout victory in the history of I-35 Rivalry.
Against Southern Miss for homecoming later in the season, the Bobcats clinched their sixth win of the season to become bowl eligible for the second straight year. Kinne became just the third coach in program history since 1984 to have consecutive seasons of six or more wins, joining Dennis Franchione [1990--1991 and 2013-2024] and Brad Wright [20082009].
Texas State will find out which bowl game they will play following the conclusion of the conference championship weekend.
