San Marcos advanced to the gold bracket in the opening round of the Corpus Christi Tournament, beating both the Rockport-Fulton Pirates and the Corpus Christi Rays Texans.
The Rattlers improved their record to 5-5 overall.
In the first game of the tournament, the Rattlers met Rockport-Fulton.
San Marcos dominated the Pirates in the first quarter, outscoring Rockport- Fulton 19-8. The Pirates were unable to overcome the Rattlers fast start, allowing San Marcos to roll towards the victory 74-43.
In the second game of the tournament, Rattlers met Corpus Christi Ray.
Both teams were deadlocked in the first quarter at 18-18 before the Rattlers outscored the Texans 24-15 in the second quarter to lead at halftime 42-33.
Ray bounced back in the third quarter, outscoring the Rattlers 2615. Entering the fourth quarter, the Texans lead 59-57.
The Rattlers made their comeback and outscored the Texans 22-20 in the fourth and sent the game into overtime 79-79.
In San Marcos’ first overtime game of the season, the Rattlers finished off the Texans to win 9286.
The Rattlers will continue play in the gold bracket before the San Marcos Daily Record time of press.
TEXAS STATE DROPS OPENER TO BRADLEY The Texas State Men’s Basketball team dropped their opener in the Myrtle Beach Invitational, losing to the Bradley Braves 8268.
Texas State drops their overall record to 2-3.
Sophomore point guard and San Marcos High School graduate Kaden Gumbs led the team in scoring with 19 points while having four rebounds and three assists.
Senior Tylan Pope was second in scoring with 15 points along with a team high seven rebounds.
Senior Dylan Dawson was third with 14 points while senior Joshua O’Garro had a team high seven rebounds with six points.
The Bobcats will continue play at the Myrtle Beach Invitational before the San Marcos Daily Record time of press.
TEXAS STATE DEFEATS JAMES MADISON IN CONFERENCE TOURNAMENT
Texas State Volleyball defeated James Madison for the third consecutive time, beating Dukes 3-0 [25-18, 25-17, 25-14].
The Bobcats advanced to the Sun Belt Tournament Semifinals for the 11th time and have yet to miss the semifinals of the tournament since joining the Sun Belt in 2013.
Sophomore outside hitter Samantha Wunsch led the team in kills with 15 followed by freshman outside hitter M.J. McCrudy with 12. Senior setter Ryann Torres led the team in assists with 32.
On defense, senior libero Alyssa Ortega led the team in digs with 11. Junior outside hitter Maggie Walsh led the team in blocks with four followed by junior middle blockers Jade Defraeye and Bailey Hanner with three.
Texas State will play Saturday in the Sun Belt Semifinals before the San Marcos Daily Record time of press.
