Texas State was back on the grind this week after capturing their sixth win of the season to become bowl eligible for the second straight year.
Head Coach G.J. Kinne noted that despite the excitement of the win from last Saturday, the Bobcats are already focused for their final home game against Georgia State.
“It was a really good Tuesday practice,” Kinne said. “The guys were locked in. [We] took it off their bodies a little bit with it being that time of the season. Just making sure the guys are fresh and ready to go on Saturday. The confidence, the discipline and the energy are going to be big for us.”
Texas State will have their showdown with Georgia State on a twogame winning streak after beating ULM and Southern Miss and will look to be on their first threegame winning streak since last season.
The Bobcats ability to refocus against the Panthers will be critical as Texas State will look to have back-to-back seasons with seven or more wins, which has not occurred since the 2008-2009 season.
“You win a big game like that, become bowl eligible, jump in the river [and] you have all these recruits; there are a lot of distractions,” Kinne said. “You have to put it to bed and go to work. Our team has matured over the course of this season, [dealing] with the highs and lows. We have to continue learning when we win to be mature and get back to work. Today, I thought we started off good for Tuesday practice.”
Winning at a consistent rate has plagued Texas State since making the transition to Division I in 1984.
The Bobcats have only had back to back seasons with six or more wins four times in both the FCS and FBS eras, coming in 1990-1991, 2008-2009, 2013-2014 and now 2023-2024.
The ability of creating and sustaining a consistent winning culture has become more of a challenge within college football with the addition of the transfer portal.
For Kinne, continuing to build a consistent winning culture at Texas State will be the key in the future of both Bobcat football and the university as a whole.
“You continue to grow as an administration, an organization and as a program as this thing goes,” Kinne said. “The more you are here, the more consistent it becomes. This trend will continue to grow in the right direction. But [with] this year more than ever — just the distractions around college football — it’s crazy what is going on.
“That part will continue to slow down and we will continue to figure this thing out. More than ever, it just shows how good we are and how good we can be.”
