The Rotary Club of San Marcos and the Texas State University Rotaract Club cosponsored a Child Trafficking Workshop on Nov 11, hosted by San Marcos CISD at Goodnight Middle School. The trainer was former prosecutor Krista Leeburg Melton. Attending were teachers and school administrators, Rotarians, Rotaract members and nonprofit organization staff and volunteers. Peter Baen provided opening and closing remarks about trafficking and Rotary’s continuing efforts to educate the community about the problem.
Melton covered general information about human trafficking and the difference between trafficking and human smuggling.
She also discussed the ways to recognize trafficking and how to effectively contact authorities to encourage law enforcement involvement.
Melton can be reached at Kirsta.Melton@JusticeStartsNow. org. She encourages concerned parents and others to watch a video available online about trafficking in Texas that is titled Be The One: In the Fight Against Human Trafficking.
