SAN MARCOS CISD
San Marcos Consolidated Independent School District is considering a big change. The district is now soliciting opinions from the public about the possibility of moving to a four-day school week.
“Following our most recent academic calendar survey, the topic of a 4-day school week was a common theme,” SMCISD Superintendent Michael Cardona said. “In order to determine the interest of our whole community, we created a survey to learn more. We have spoken to several districts that have adopted a 4-day school week calendar and that work will continue, along with reviewing the survey data from our students, staff and families.”
According to SMCISD, research shows that districts that have adopted a four-day school week have seen an increase in staff retention. SMCISD would look into providing childcare to families in need, if a four-day school week is adopted, but school officials said that it’s too early in the process to determine how much that would cost the district or where the funds would come from. In order to make up for the lost school time, SMCISD would need to extend the campus school day by approximately 30 to 45 minutes. The additional time would maintain an August to May academic calendar and ensure the district is meeting the mandatory 75,600 instructional minutes set by the Texas Education Agency.
