San Marcos fell 52-7 at home against district opponent New Braunfels Canyon in the Rattlers’ final game of the season on Friday night.

While the loss ended the Rattlers season without a win, San Marcos head coach John Walsh was proud of the way his team played through a turbulent season.

“There were some good things in the first half of the season,” Walsh said. “To end the season like we ended it, I’m really proud how the seniors showed class and character. They could have laid down, some didn’t make it through. So for the ones that did make it through, it’s going to pay off later in life.”

Canyon got the scoring started when running back Jackson Regan broke loose for a 52-yard rushing touchdown to put the Cougars up 7-0 to open the game.

After a San Marcos three-and-out, Canyon once again drove down the field. Jackson Regan capped off an eight play, 62-yard touchdown drive with a 4-yard run into the end zone that made it 14-0.

The Rattlers were able to respond on the ensuing drive. A 22-yard run from senior running back Ryan Loera got San Marcos into the red zone, and Andrew Farias, another senior, got the ball into the end zone with a 20-yard run that made it 14-7.

The Cougars continued their hot start on offense, scoring a 22-yard touchdown pass off a trick play pass to wide receiver Donavon Craycraft that extended the Cougar lead to 21-7.

San Marcos was able to get the ball into Cougar territory on the following drive, but turned the ball over on downs after an incomplete pass. Canyon took the ball back and added seven more points on a touchdown run by Reece Deitrick that put the Cougars up 28-7.

San Marcos picked up a first down, but their next drive stalled and they punted back to Canyon. The Cougars needed just one play to add to their lead, as Deitrick found Isaac Early deep over the middle of the field for a 77-yard touchdown strike that made it 35-7.

The Rattlers went three-and-out again, and the Cougars found the end zone one more time, taking a 42-7 lead into halftime.

Both offenses exchanged punts on the first three drives of the third quarter, but Canyon finally broke through once again on a 32-yard rushing touchdown by D.J. Luckey that gave the Cougars a 49-7 lead.

After another San Marcos punt, Canyon took the air out of the ball with a 12-play drive that ended in a 24-yard field goal by Carlos Henriquez to make it 52-7. The Rattlers turned the ball over on downs on the ensuing drive, and the Cougars kneeled the ball out to end the game.
