San Marcos closes out the season at home as the Rattlers play host to the New Braunfels Canyon Cougars.
Canyon enters their showdown with the Rattlers holding a 5-4 record. The Cougars currently sit in third place over Buda Johnson and Converse Judson but must win tonight in order to qualify for the playoffs.
The Rattlers are coming off a bye week in Week 10 while the Cougars are coming off a 62-0 loss to Cibolo Steele. Canyon is also entering the game on a two-game losing streak with a loss to Judson 1413 in Week 9.
The history of the San Marcos-Canyon series dates back to the 1998 season with the Cougars becoming a frequent opponent for the Rattlers having played each 14 times over the past 26 years.
The first ever meeting between San Marcos and Canyon ended with the Rattlers defeating the Cougars 45-15.
The next year saw perhaps the most memorable game between the two teams with San Marcos beating the Cougars and future Texas State quarterback Bradley George 49-42.
Both teams would meet again during both the 2000 and 2001 seasons only for the Rattlers to continue their dominance over the Cougars winning both games.
The two teams would not meet again until the 2006 season when the Cougars got their first win over the Rattlers 23-21. San Marcos returned the favor in the 2007 season, beating Canyon 28-21.
Canyon then won their next four meetings against San Marcos and tied the all-time series at 5-5. The Rattlers snapped their drought against Canyon during the 2016 season, beating the Cougars 2720. San Marcos again beat Canyon in 2017.
In the last meeting between San Marcos and Canyon during the 2019 season, both teams entered the game 0-9 records. The Rattlers avoided the winless season by beating the Cougars 27-22.
San Marcos leads the overall series against Canyon 8-6.
Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. Friday night at Toyota Rattler Stadium.
