Tamale Fest: A Sizzling Success

This past weekend, the courthouse grounds in Hays County came alive with the sights, sounds and flavors – definitely flavors – of the very first Tamale Fest. Held on the grounds of the historic courthouse, the event was more than just a celebration of food; it was a heartfelt tribute to the community’s rich cultural heritage and unity.

“It is my profound honor to stand here at the very first Tamale Fest in Hays County, right on the grounds of our historic courthouse,” Hays County Judge Ruben Becerra said. “Today, we gather for more than just a celebration of food; we’re here to honor the enduring traditions and shared values that unite us all. Tamales represent a cherished piece of our collective heritage, a symbol of warmth, resilience and unity that transcends generations. By coming together, we not only celebrate a beloved dish but also strengthen the bonds that make our community and our country extraordinary.”

Attendees enjoyed a day full of vibrant music, buzzing local vendors, an adorable Chihuahua beauty pageant, with the winner being Gober, and a fierce tamaleeating contest. The main event was the tamale cook-off, where talented competitors showcased their best recipes to win tamale glory and cash prizes. Every moment of the festival was cherished by the community as they came together in celebration.

The county gave a special thanks go to Richard Anzaldua and the Hays County Cook-Off Association for organizing a flawless event and for leaving the courthouse grounds as spotless as they found them. The county is grateful for all that Richard and his organization did to make Tamale Fest a success. Additionally, Hays County extends its gratitude to the Hays County Constable’s Office for ensuring safety and security throughout the festivities.

A special thank you was extended to the Gary Job Corps for the privilege of presenting the colors, adding a touch of honor and pride to the event.

“I am filled with pride to stand among such remarkable, diverse, and dedicated Americans,” Becerra said. “This is a moment that reminds us of the strength, beauty and unity of our great nation. I am deeply proud to be an American!”

Tamale Fest also served as a powerful opportunity to support Taryn, a brave young girl battling cancer. Through the generosity of attendees, funds were raised to ease her medical expenses, showcasing the heart and spirit of the Hays County community.

Hays County would like to thank the entire community for showing up, supporting Taryn, and making Tamale Fest an unforgettable event. Save the date for the next event on March 1, 2025, when the Fiesta of Flames – a Steak and Fajita Cook-Off – promises to be the hottest ticket in town. Get ready for another day of food, fun, and community unity.
