Mendez Students become well-known Renaissance figures for living museum
Lauren Guess, a teacher at Mendez Elementary, did a living museum project with her 5th grade students. Guess said that leading up to the project, the students “read, learned and explored the Renaissance. We learned about the important people from the time period, their work, the role of women and more. From there students partnered up, chose an important person from that time, researched, wrote a mini speech and painted one of their artist’s paintings or something that represented their important person.” Then the student body at large was invited to visit museum day in the school’s courtyard. The students were instructed to walk up to a painting and push a makeshift button, which would prompt the students to recite their speech that informed the listener of the person they researched, their life and their work. It was referred to as a living museum because the students became the person from their project.
