LETTER TO THE EDITOR
Every election cycle our community is faced with far too few opportunities to learn about our local candidates. Several organizations have stepped up to publish questionnaires and host candidate forums for interests like the river, business and real estate. The San Marcos Civics Club prioritizes issues of transparency and access to our local government and believes that, if we elect candidates that prioritize these issues, we can help restore trust in our local government. To that end, we have published a candidate questionnaire that centers ethics and community outreach that is accessible with our other resources at linktr. ee/smcivicsclub. The questionnaire asks all the candidates whether they support issues like these that help our community be more engaged and have more time to talk about our future. The San Marcos Civics Club has worked to build community guides over the last several months to help neighbors have easier access to city resources such as City Council and Staff, Boards and Commissions, as well as facilities and rentals. Additionally, we’re receiving and posting a DRAFT agenda for each City Council meeting one week early - which gives the community more time to organize around the issues that are important to them. Also, October 28th from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., we’re hosting a candidate forum at Tantra Coffee for our next meeting, which is every 4th Monday of the month. Unlike most forums this is entirely conversation driven. We’ll invite the candidates to speak about themselves for 5 min each, then open the floor up for questions from the audience. The Civics Club provides a non-partisan space to talk about the issues that impact our local government and works to create more opportunities in San Marcos to empower people. We hope that you join us, because solidarity matters!
