HAYS COUNTY
Hays County is hosting an open house tonight on the road bond that will be on the ballot in the upcoming General Election as Proposition A.
The $440 million bond election is seeking voter approval for 31 infrastructure projects across Hays County.
Three of those projects are in the San Marcos area.
There is a project on Centerpoint Road that would create a grade separation allowing the road to go over the Union Pacific railroad crossing, which is between Interstate 35 and Hunter Road. The estimated cost for the project is $30,796,000. The project is in coordination with the city of San Marcos.
A second project on the bond in the San Marcos area is the construction of two lanes undivided with shoulders and turn lanes on Old Bastrop Highway from Centerpoint Road to Rattler Road. This project is considered shovel ready, as it was designed with funds from the 2016 Road Bond, and has an estimated cost of $11,187,000.
The third project would be to purchase right of way and design an extension of Leah Avenue, which currently dead ends at Clovis Barker Road before starting up again at Cottonwood Parkway behind Sam’s Club. The extension would connect both sections of the road. The cost of the right-ofway and design is estimated at $1,851,000.
The county has already hosted two open houses. The same information will be presented at each open house. Tonight’s meeting will be held at the San Marcos Public Library from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. The final open house will be in Dripping Springs on Thursday at the Dripping Springs Ranch Park Event Center.
The bond would add 2 cents per $100 valuation to the county’s property tax rate, which is set at 35 cents for next year.
