GriefShare

When: Aug. 19 - Nov. 18, 6 - 8 p.m.

What: GriefShare, a 14 week grief support group to offer help and encouragement after the death of a loved one. A practical Bible-based program open to all, regardless of faith affiliation.

Turtle Tuesdays

When: Every Tuesday, 10 - 11 a.m.

Where: San Marcos Discovery Center, What: Participants can interact with, feed and create enrichmentitems for the turtles who call the Discovery Center home.

Food and supplies are provided, and no registration is required for this program.

Wild Wednesdays

When: Every Wednesday 8 a.m. - 12 p.m. and 1 - 5 p.m.

San Marcos Discovery Center, 430 Riverside Drive Wild Wednesdays will take place every Wednesday with a different wildlife theme each month. This free, kid-focused program includes education through natural history items, a self-guided activity, thematic color sheet, craft and more. No registration is required for this come-and-go program. FREE!

60+ Game Day

When: Meets every Monday- except City Holidays, 12:30 - 4 p.m.

What: Game materials for Bridge, Mexican Train Dominoes, Hand & Foot, and 42 are provided. New members are welcome. We had a great response from people that want to learn to play Mahjong. Unfortunately, we don’t have enough people to teach them. If you know how to play Mahjong and are interested in helping others learn to play, please join us for Game Day on Mondays. We have also been asked to see if there are people interested in playing Pinochle, Euchre, Backgammon, Canasta, and regular dominoes. Understanding the U.S. Constitution When: Wednesday, Oct. 16, 23 & 30, 1 to 2:30 p.m.

Where: San Marcos Public Library Who: Join author and former TXST Professor Jo Snider for this 5-week session on the U.S. Constitution; a LifeLong Learning presentation. Recommended for adults; minors with an adult.

Altered Book Art + Zentangle When: Monday, Oct. 14 & 28, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Where: San Marcos Public Library Who: Create an altered book or work on Zentangles in this combo class! A Zentangle is a miniature abstract work of art created by a collection of patterns. It is typically done on a 3.5' X 3.5 “paper” tile using a pencil and a black pen.

Instructor: Lana Daniel. Alter a book and transform it into your creation—a photo album, recipe book, journal—whatever you imagine! Instructor: Tanya Turley. All materials provided. Funded by St. David’s Foundation, for ages 18 & up.

ENG-Aging Series: Palliative and Hospice Care Explained!

When: Tuesday, Oct. 15, 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. Where: San Marcos Public Library Who: Kathy Palmer, Aging and Care Consultant, presents the differences between and benefits of Palliative Care and Hospice Care. Funded by St. David’s Foundation; for ages 18 and up.

60+ Indoor Cornhole

When: Oct. 15, 1 p.m.

What: Whether you’re a seasoned player or new to this sport, join us once a month for 60+ Indoor Cornhole at the San Marcos Activity Center. Cornhole is similar to horseshoes except you use wooden boxes called cornhole platforms and corn bags instead of horseshoes and metal stakes.

Contestants take turns pitching their bags at the platform until a contestant reaches the score of 21 points. A bag in the hole scores 3 points, while one on the platform scores 1 point. Benefits of playing Cornhole for Senior Citizens include increased mobility and leg strength, depth perception and vision, and balance and hip mobility.

What: We are looking for trivia buffs ages 60 and above to join us for our new program, 60+ Trivia Time, a pub style trivia game Where: San Marcos Activity Center!

Registration for Trivia time is not required. You will not have to download anything to your device. Play on any smart phone, tablet or laptop via a web browser.

San Souci Presents: Dance

60+ Pumpkin Decorating

When: Oct. 23, 10 a.m.

What: You are invited to our second annual Pumpkin Decorating event, sponsored by Magnolia Hospice.

Participants will be given a pumpkin to decorate as they wish, using acrylic paints and various craft supplies. This is a free event and all supplies, including the pumpkins, will be provided by Magnolia Hospice and San Marcos Parks and Recreation.

Where: Dunbar Recreation Center located at 801 West MLK.
