San Marcos will look to pull off the upset when the Rattlers go on the road to San Antonio for a showdown with the East Central Hornets.
East Central comes into the game following a loss in an offensive shootout with the Cibolo Steele Knights 64-59. The Hornets are currently 4-2 overall with a 1-1 district record.
In the game against Steele, quarterback Isaiah Mackey passed for 289 yards and five touchdowns for the Hornets. Wide receiver Deirionn Smith-Cline caught seven passes for 115 yards and two touchdowns while receiver Joseph Kelly caught eight passes for 80 yards and three touchdowns. East Central also rushed for 236 yards on the Knights.
The history of the San Marcos-East Central series dates back to 1986 where the Rattlers and the Hornets were paired as district rivals from 1986 through 1993. During this period, the Hornets led the series at 7-1.
San Marcos and East Central split following the 1993 season before locking horns during the 2004 season.
The Rattlers defeated the Hornets 69-20 for their first win over East Central since 1998. San Marcos again defeated East Central during the 2005 season.
Since 2015, San Marcos and East Central have been consistent opponents playing nine out of the last ten years with the lone exception being the 2020 season. Unlike the previous matchup during the 1980s and 1990s, San Marcos has turned the tables on East Central, going 7-4 against the Hornets since 2004.
East Central leads the overall series 11-8.
Kickoff for San Marcos- East Central is set for 7:30 p.m. at East Central Stadium in San Antonio.
