City waiting on Union Pacific in effort to restore Quiet Zones

SAN MARCOS RAILROADS

Railroad “Quiet Zones” throughout San Marcos have been rather noisy since early June while the city of San Marcos works to update infrastructure that allows the silence in the first place.

“We understand the community's concerns about hearing train horns in designated quiet zones. The city of San Marcos is currently awaiting final permitting from Union Pacific to begin necessary construction to address quiet zone deficiencies,” the city of San Marcos stated in a facebook post.

The planned construction includes: Resurfacing of faded striping Installing or replacing missing or damaged signage Curb and median replacement Once construction is complete, the city will send a Letter of Affirmation to the Federal Railroad Administration to request an inspection. Upon approval, a Notice of Establishment will be sent to Union Pacific, and shortly thereafter, the train horns will cease.

“We anticipate construction to begin within the next several weeks,” the city stated. “Thank you for your patience as we work to resolve this issue.”
