Walk for ovarian cancer awareness, fundraiser at City Park

In 2024, about 12,740 women will die from ovarian cancer in the United States, according to estimates from the American Cancer Society. It is one of the leading causes of cancer deaths among women.

The National Ovarian Cancer Coalition Central Region is hosting the 2024 Central Texas Together in TEAL Signature Walk, an event designed to unite the local community in the battle against ovarian cancer. Scheduled for 8 a.m. on Sunday, Oct. 6 at San Marcos City Park, this year’s walk is a chance for Central Texans to come together in person or virtually to raise awareness, honor survivors and fund critical programs that save lives.

This annual walk holds special significance for local families like Sheila Edwards and her team, Nell’s Angels.

“We joined the walk just three days after our mother passed,” Edwards said. “Eleven years later, we’re still here, advocating for early detection and a cure.”

Since that time, Edwards’s commitment to this cause has only deepened when she began working full-time for the National Ovarian Cancer Coalition about five years ago. Recently, Edwards was promoted to the position of Central Texas Regional Manager.

Participants will have the opportunity to support NOCC’s mission, which includes vital services like financial aid, meal delivery, support groups and cutting-edge research efforts that directly benefit ovarian cancer patients, survivors and their families across Central Texas and beyond.

Ovarian cancer continues to affect thousands of women nationwide, and Central Texas is no exception. This signature walk provides an opportunity for our community to make a difference — whether by walking, donating or simply spreading the word. Ovarian cancer survivors, caregivers and families in San Marcos, Austin, Waco and beyond are encouraged to join this movement to save lives and ensure no one faces ovarian cancer alone.

Together in TEAL events are not just about walking; they are about coming together as a community to provide hope and take strides toward a world where ovarian cancer is preventable and curable.

Registration for the walk is available online at p2p. onecause.com/centraltx.

Whether attending in person or virtually, every step taken at the event helps NOCC continue to provide critical support services and fund life-saving research.

Funds raised at the event directly benefit the Central Texas community, helping NOCC deliver education, advocacy and resources to those who need them most.
