11th Annual Día de los Muertos 5K set for Oct. 26

The 11th Annual Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) celebration 5K Run/ Walk & Kids Fun Run will take place this year on Saturday, Oct. 26, at Hernandez Elementary School 333 Stagecoach Trail, starting at 8 a.m.

The 5K race proceeds will be allocated to the Johnnie T. Rosales Memorial Scholarship organization, which has been providing scholarship awards to selected San Marcos High School students since 2010. In keeping with tradition, every year a local citizen is honored posthumously for their contributions to the local community. The late Douglas Kupper was selected as this year’s honoree.

Doug Kupper, a dedicated public servant and beloved member of the community, passed away on July 25 after a courageous battle with cancer. He grew up in Grand Forks, N. D, where he graduated from Central High School in 1985. Doug had a strong sense of duty and patriotism, which led him to serve his country in the United States Air Force as a Vehicle Operator/Dispatcher stationed at Bergstrom Air Force Base from 1985 to 1989.

He met the love of his life Gloria Ramirez in 1993, and they settled in San Marcos where they shared a life together for 30 years.
