BACK THE BOBCATS

COMMUNITY EVENT

Spirit campaign winners announced

The San Marcos Area Chamber of Commerce announced the winners of the second annual Back the Bobcats Community Spirit Campaign. Businesses across the community decorated their storefronts to support the Bobcats leading up to the first game of the season on Saturday.

Beth Damphousse, wife of Texas State University President Kelly Damphousse, came up with the idea for the contest last season. She was a judge along with San Marcos Area Chamber of Commerce President and CEO Page Michel as well as Marci Coryell, wife of Athletic Director Don Coryell, and Summer Kinne, wife of head coach G.J. Kinne.

There were five categories awarded as well as two honorable mentions.

Café Cortado won the award for best exterior. Gumby’s Pizza won best interior. Texas Regional Bank won best window display. KnD’s Boutique won most spirited, and The Groove Cafè won the award for the best first time competitor. Chick-fil-A at Aquarena Springs was named honorable mention for the best interior, and Edward Jones-Crystal Dixon was named honorable mention for best exterior.

KnD’s Boutique, owned by Kristan Alvarez-Machado and Della Lucio, greeted the Back the Bobcats judges with a performance by Boko, the San Marcos High School Drumline and the San Marcos High School Diamond Line. Winners were announced at the Back the Bobcats Block Party on Friday night. The party was held on North Street, which was shut down next to Zelick’s. The Bobcat band, cheerleaders and Boko were just some of the entertainment at the event that packed the street full of cheering Bobcat fans.

“The Block Party Pep Rally was a blast for everyone involved,” Michel said. “The energy and excitement in the air were contagious as our community came together to celebrate Bobcat pride. It’s events like these that bring out the best in our community and build up the unity and spirit of our town.”

The chamber is also organizing a Rally for the Rattlers community spirit campaign that will occur during the last week of September, leading up to the San Marcos High School homecoming football game. It will also have a decorating competition with great prizes. More details will be announced soon.
