First Tuesday SMTX to present “Last Man Standing”

Politics, Texas Style is the subject of “Last Man Standing,” presented by First Tuesday SMTX Sept. 3 at the Price Center in San Marcos. Aired on PBS’ POV program and an official selection of SXSW, the 87-minute documentary takes a behind-the-scenes look at two elections.

Revisit Hays County, circa 2002, with this humorously enlightening nail-biter. It follows the election between incumbent Rick Green and newbie Patrick Rose for local state representative contrasted with a polarizing race for governor, pitting an ascendant Republican Party against a historic multicultural Democratic ticket. Characters include Karl Rove, Ann Richards, Molly Ivins, Paul Begala, Henry Cisneros, and especially two, young ambitious candidates for state rep who literally fight it out until late on election night, leaving one last man standing.

The Austin American Statesman wrote, “If everyone could see elections this gripping, more of us might get off the couch and vote.” Following the film, there will be a question and answer period with the director Paul Steckler and Patrick Rose, former Texas State Representative and local SMTX resident.
