Texas State defeated the Houston Christian Huskies in a five set thriller 3-2 [19-25, 25-22, 2225, 25-17, 15-12] in the first match of the Rice Tournament.
The Bobcats improved to 1-0 in the season opener in the first of many road games for the team.
The first set was competitive back and forth early on with neither team taking a lead larger than two points as both the Huskies and the Bobcats were tied at 15-15.
Houston Christian outscored Texas State 10-4 in the final stretch of the first set to win 25-19.
The second set became another back and forth affair with the Bobcats and Huskies finding themselves tied up at 1717. This time Texas State went on a solid run of their own, going on a 5-1 run en route to a 25-22 win in the second set and tying the match at 1-1.
Houston Christian responded by taking the third set at 25-22 only for the Bobcats to win the fourth set also at 25--22 to send the game into the fifth set.
The fifth set started in a 4-4 tie before Texas State went on a 3-0 run, capitalizing on two Husky errors, and taking a 7-4 lead. Houston Christian made a comeback and soon made it a one-point game with Texas State still leading at 9-8.
But the Bobcats responded with a 4-0 run after kills from outside hitters Samantha Wunsch and Maggie Walsh as Texas State led 13-8. Texas State made it to match point at 14-9 before Houston Christian made a 3-0 run, making the score 14-12. But Bailey Hanner sealed the win for the Bobcats with a kill as Texas State won the set 15-12 to take the match 3-2.
