After a long fall camp, it is finally gameweek for Texas State, who is slated to open the season against the Lamar Cardinals at home.
The excitement was palpable on the field for the Bobcats and Head Coach G.J. Kinne, who wanted his team to “bring the juice.”
“You get tired of coaching against each other offensively, defensively and on special teams,” Kinne said. “You get to hit someone else [this week], so it was really good energy today. We challenged them to come out there and bring the juice. Then after practice I challenged them to do it again. Hopefully we are able to accomplish that. With school starting, most teams are going through the motions and being tired, but we didn’t have that approach.”
Offensive coordinator Mack Leftwich had the same sentiment.
“We work a lot of hours in the offseason and spend a lot of time recruiting all of these guys to come here,” Leftwich said. “We put a lot of effort into this thing. We get 12 opportunities guaranteed, so we are fired up to go out there and make the most out of this one. I’m fired up to not be going against our defense everyday.”
For offensive lineman Dorian Strawn, getting back into the regular season schedule and routine has been a highlight.
“It’s great,” Strawn said. “[Just] getting back into that game routine and the feel of the season. We have to win a championship, so you have to keep your body right, get into that regimen and get right for the season.”
Kickoff for Texas State-Lamar is set for Saturday, Aug. 31 at 7:30 p.m. There will also be a special ribbon cutting ceremony at 5:30 p.m.
