‘Along Came Kinky’ documentary pays homage to Friedman

In a fitting homage to Kinky Friedman who passed away on June 27, the First Tuesday SMTX Film Series presents the documentary, “Along Came Kinky … Texas Jewboy for Governor,” August 6 at the Price Center in San Marcos.

The documentary by David Hartstein follows the 2006 independent gubernatorial campaign in Texas of Friedman, who, with no political experience, famously campaigned with the slogan, “Why the hell not?”

Outspoken, satirical, provocative and proudly offensive, Friedman had already reached iconic status with his band, The Texas Jewboys, when he ran against incumbent Rick Perry and found himself in a rare five-way race for governor. The film chronicles the impressive effort by his army of grassroot volunteers to get him on the ballot and keep him in front of voters, drawing a memorable portrait of Friedman and ultimately, Texas politics.

Following the film, there will be a question and answer period with the director Hartstein and Coach Smith, host of KWVH radio’s “Over Easy with Coach” show.

Tickets are $5. Doors open at 6:15 p.m, complementary pizza and drinks served from 6:30 p.m., and the film starts at 7. The Price Center is located at 222 W. San Antonio St. in San Marcos. For more information about First Tuesday SMTX, visit firsttuesdaysmtx.com.
