Preserve access to community oncology for Texas cancer patients

LETTER TO THE EDITOR

Nearly 148,000 Texans are expected to be diagnosed with cancer in 2024 – a record high. As patients evaluate their care options, too few realize that community care clinics offer high-quality care for patients and caregivers alike.

At independent cancer centers, patients work closely with our patient care teams to personalize their care plan – at a fraction of the cost of care provided in the hospital setting. However, misguided policy has enabled hospital systems to rapidly acquire community cancer clinics, forcing patients to pay more and travel farther for care.

Thankfully, Congressman Greg Casar has taken the time to understand the value of independent cancer care by recently visiting to our San Antonio oncology practice. We look forward to working with Rep. Casar and his colleagues in Washington as Congress considers policies that bolster patients’ access to community cancer care.

Dr. Allyson Harroff is a hematologist-oncologist at Texas Oncology-San Antonio.
