KYLE — Kyle Police continue investigating a hit-and-run accident that left two female teenagers deceased and three others injured. The accident occurred around 9:20 p.m. Saturday night.
Hays County Sheriff’s Office deputies quickly located Macario M. Hernandez, age 61, of Buda, whom police say fled on foot after the crash and taken into custody.
Kyle Police Chief Jeff Barnett said the two-vehicle crash happened at the intersection of Windy Hill Road and the northbound Interstate Highway 35 access road. A Dodge pickup truck hit a Honda sedan with five passengers. Three passengers in the sedan were transported to an area hospital. All of the passengers are from out of town.
Hays County Pct. 2 Justice of the Peace Beth Smith pronounced the two teenagers — Payton Weissman, 16, and Hayden Weissman, 18 — deceased on the scene. Both were wearing seat belts at the time of the accident.
Hernandez was booked into the Hays County Jail on two charges of accident causing death and three counts of accident causing serious bodily injury. Police say additional charges could be added pending the results of toxicology tests.
The eastbound lanes of Windy Hill Road at the I-35 access road intersection were shut down for several hours while the KPD Crash Team investigated the scene, with help from Kyle Fire Department.
On Monday, April 29, Kyle PD’s Crash Team closed down that same intersection after morning rush hour for accident reconstruction.
Anyone who may have witnessed the accident is asked to contact Kyle PD at 512-268-3232.
