Texas State completes second consecutive sweep over Louisiana

It hasn’t been done since 2017.

The Bobcats (31-13, 15-6 Sun Belt) completed a sweep in their three-game series at Louisiana (20-27, 8-13) over the weekend, beating the Ragin’ Cajuns 13-9, 3-2 and 10-8. It’s the second series in a row in which the team has gone undefeated, sweeping Arkansas State last week. The last time that happened came two years ago, when the maroon and gold took three victories over Richmond and Alabama A&M, each.

Texas State took its first win on Friday, as redshirt junior left fielder Will Hollis batted in four runs. Nine of the visitors’ 13 runs in the game came in the fifth inning, when they racked up seven hits and four walks. Senior catcher Felipe Rodriguez was the last to score in the frame, launching a three-run homer homer.

The second game of the series was a bit tighter, as both teams remained tied at 2-2 through three innings. Sophomore right fielder John Wuthrich scored the winning run in the top of the fourth, doubling down the infield line, advancing to third base on a wild pitch, then crossing home plate on a balk.

The team jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first inning of Sunday’s game, loading the bases, walking three times before sophomore first baseman Wesley Faison hit a two-RBI single. Louisiana nearly came back, trailing just 9-8 in the seventh, but the Bobcats hung on to take the 10-8 win.

Texas State now has four hitters batting above .300 in Hollis, redshirt infielder Jaylen Hubbard, sophomore infielder Dalton Shuffield and junior infielder Jaxon Williams, with redshirt senior outfielder Travon Benton (.298) nearly eclipsing the mark.

The Bobcats will travel to San Antonio on Tuesday to go up against UTSA at 6 p.m. Texas State is 2-0 against the Roadrunners this season, picking up an 8-3 road victory on March 5 and a 14-1 win at Bobcat Ballpark on April 2.
