Unitarians collect goods for healthy food drive

The San Marcos Unitarian Universalist Fellowship (SMUUF) is collecting fresh produce and healthy nonperishables to donate to the Hays County Spring Harvest Healthy Food Drive Challenge during their Sunday morning Worship Service through Sunday, May 12.

Several SMUUF members dressed in veggie costumes at a recent Worship Service to highlight their participation in this Food Drive and encourage the congregation to contribute.

The Food Bank distributes 3,000 pounds of healthy pantry items like soup, canned vegetables, and canned tuna, and 6,000 pounds of fresh produce like tomatoes, oranges, and carrots each week!

Jeannie Lewis, SMUUF Social Justice Chair, said, “SMUUF has participated each year in this Healthy Food Drive and regularly donates the most fresh produce.  We also help support the two Food Bank garden plots at Alamo Community Garden, which provides fresh produce year round.”

Whitney Lewis, Development & Special Events Coordinator for the Food Bank said, “We are very grateful for everyone — including SMUUF — who is participating in this year’s Spring Harvest Healthy Food Drive Challenge!  With many people traveling during the summer, and the Texas State students leaving, we notice a drastic decline in our food donations.  However, we still have food insecure individuals in our community who depend on us.  This food drive is a way for us to prepare for the shortage, and keep our shelves stocked. Thank you SMUUF for helping in the fight against hunger!   The winning team (most pounds collected) wins bragging rights and our awesome traveling trophy to display for a year!”
