Texas State swept its Thursday doubleheader against Georgia Southern. The Bobcats earned a 7-1 win in game one and secured a 5-3 victory in game two inside Eagle Field in Statesboro, Ga.
Game One
Texas State (24-19, 12-7 Sun Belt) scored first against Georgia Southern (19-23, 5-4) in game one.
Junior center fielder Christiana McDowell got on base in the first inning with a bunt single. She moved to third on an error and a sacrifice bunt. Sophomore shortstop Tara Oltmann scored McDowell with an RBI groundout.
The Bobcats extended their lead to 2-0 when Oltmann hit an RBI double in the third inning. McDowell ripped a home run over the left field wall in the fifth inning to put Texas State on top 3-0.
The Bobcats used a four-run seventh inning to put the game away. Oltmann recorded her third RBI in the explosive inning. Sophomore first base ArieAnn Bell brought home two runs with an RBI triple.
Georgia Southern got on the board in the seventh when senior third base Hannah Farrell hit a two-out RBI double. But that’s all the damage the Eagles would do and the Bobcats took the opening game 7-1.
Sophomore pitcher Meagan King tallied the victory in the circle for the Bobcats. She only allowed one run on six hits and three walks, while striking out three.
Oltmann recorded a game-high three RBIs. She has amassed a team-high 10 multi-RBI games this year.
Game Two
Georgia Southern found the scoreboard first in the second matchup of the day. Freshman designated player Jess Mazur brought home two runs with an RBI single in the second inning.
But Texas State answered in the fourth inning when Bell and junior third base Hailey MacKay hit RBI singles. The Bobcats took a 3-2 lead in the fifth inning when a throwing error allowed junior second base Bailee Carter to score. The Eagles, however, quickly responded with a run of their own in the bottom frame to even the score.
MacKay hit a go-ahead RBI to put Texas State ahead with an RBI single in the sixth. Oltmann brought home an insurance run in the seventh to help the Bobcats take the game 5-3.
Junior pitcher Dalilah Barrera secured the win in relief. She came in for the final 5.2 innings and only gave up one run on three hits and walk. Barrera struck out 10 batters, which included the final seven of nine outs in the game.
McDowell, Oltmann, MacKay and Carter all recorded two hits. Texas State out-hit the Eagles, 10-6.
The Bobcats closed out their three-game series against Georgia Southern on Saturday. The game ended after press time.
