Shooter walks in on police

When Korey Ryan Aleman walked into Nephew’s Bar around 1 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 5, police were already there  — and they were looking for him.

Aleman, 23, of New Braunfels, is accused of shooting into a crowd of people early on New Year’s Day in the 200 block of West San Antonio Street shortly after they had left Nephew’s. Aleman, who was in a car parked near one the group was to be leaving in, pulled a gun and started firing after one of the group asked him “What’s up,” according to an affidavit of probable cause filed by SMPD Detective Patrick Aubry.

Two people were hit and one was grazed by a bullet from Aleman’s handgun.

Police weren’t notified of the incident until the group of victims, who reportedly “panicked after being shot or shot at,” fled the scene for the Copper Beech Apartments on Mill Street, where someone called 911.

From there, the two people who were wounded were transferred “to a nearby medical facility” for treatment of what Aubry described as “serious bodily injury.” Officers at the scene of the shooting found blood, along with one round of live ammunition and one shell casing.

After firing the shots, Aleman fled eastbound on San Antonio Street in a vehicle described as a tan or silver Toyota Corolla or similar make, early 2000s model with “very” dark tinted windows.

The suspect was described as a Hispanic male with a “man bun” approximately five feet, five inches tall and lean build, wearing a “big black coat, dark pants and black shoes or boots.”

Police began tracking his movements prior to the shooting by reviewing video from several downtown bars, including The Marc and The Rooftop.

Aubry and two officers assigned to the SMPD’s downtown unit were at Nephew’s at approximately 1 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 5 checking to see if staff recognized the suspect when Aleman walked in. They asked him to step outside and he did, but fought when they attempted to handcuff him.

At the time of his arrest he had in his possession a Ruger handgun, and it’s believed he had it with him in each of the bars. Alcohol law prohibits the possession of a handgun inside facilities were alcohol is sold.

Police didn’t release any information about the shooting until Aleman was in custody, and there is no word on the condition of the people who were shot. Aleman remains behind bars on bonds totaling $140,000. He is charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, a second degree felony, and unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon and two counts of possession of a weapon on premises that serve alcohol, both third degree felonies, as well as lesser offenses of failure to identify, possession of marijuana and a controlled substance, and a parole violation from the Austin Police Department.

According to online records, this is Aleman’s first arrest in Hays County; however he has been in and out of Comal County jail six times dating back to May of 2013 on charges including unlawfully carrying a weapon, tampering with evidence and delivery of marijuana in a drug free zone.
