The Texas State Department of Philosophy is hosting a Deliberative Dialogue on Equitable Housing today starting at 4:30 p.m. at the San Marcos Public Library as part of the Philosophy Dialogues Series.
Deliberative dialogue offers communities a fresh approach to civil discourse. While other communication formats are often used to inform citizens, such as debate or focused discussion, a deliberative dialogue is not competitive, nor is it a discussion solely focused on acquiring knowledge. Its intent is to help people reflect on reliable information about an issue, share their personal opinions and to encourage participatory democracy.
The Equitable Housing Panel will feature community leaders from the Workforce Housing Task Force and will center around information from the draft San Marcos Housing Needs Assessment, which was completed in March as part of the Workforce Housing Initiative and Taskforce.
Panelists will discuss what types of housing exist in San Marcos and where is it located, if there is a correlation between the type of housing, its location and the residents that live within it as well as what historic forces have led to existing housing patterns.
After the panel discussion, attendees will be broken up into group discussions that will be led by Texas State University Philosophy faculty and Applied Ethics students.
This event is free and open to the public. For more information call the library at 512-393-8200.
