Phyllis Antoinette Bigby was born on Sept. 20, 1935, in Marshall, TX. She departed this earth on March 28, 2019, in Fischer, TX, at the age of 83.

Phyllis grew up in Marshall. She earned a Bachelor of Science at Stephen F. Austin State University and a Master’s in Recreation at Indiana University.

Phyllis taught and coached in multiple locations before joining the Physical Education Department at SWTSU (now Texas State) in 1967. She was instrumental in establishing the Recreational Department at SWTSU and worked there until 1982. Phyllis attended 6 Olympics and traveled around the globe.

Phyllis, with Judy Rinker, owned and operated Harambe Oaks, a recreational ranch, hosting youth summer camps, conferences, Elder Hostels and a variety of guests for 26 years (1979-2006). After leaving Harambe Oaks, Phyllis retired in Fischer.

Phyllis was involved in Fischer and North Shore UMC. She enjoyed traveling, attending local events, and co-hosting social events at home. She was an avid beekeeper, kept a vegetable garden, had chickens, and shared fresh produce. Phyllis enjoyed life and stayed close to her family.

Phyllis was preceded in death by her parents, Audra and Alta Bigby, and her older sister, Sylvia Bigby Major-Krusekopf. She leaves behind her sisters, Annelle Covington and Romelle Parker and husband Jimmy; six nieces and nephews; nine great-nieces and nephews; and Judy Rinker, her longtime friend, housemate and business partner.

A Celebration of Life will be held at the North Shore UMC, 23880 N. Cranes Mill Road, Canyon Lake, Texas on April 13, 2019, at 2 p.m. For more information, please visit Thomason Funeral Home's website. 512-396-2300.
