San Marcos took eighth place in the 26-6A track and field district championships on Thursday, as two Rattlers qualified for the area meet.
Senior distance runner Anthony Lopez took second place in the boys’ 800 meters, finishing in 1:58.94. He was followed by Trystan Summers, who took sixth place at 2:03.25, and Travis Rounds, taking eight at 2:04.72.
Lopez also earned a personal record in the 1,600 meters, clocking in at 4:25.29, good for fourth place. The senior shaved more than two seconds off his previous career best, which he set just last week at the 2019 92nd Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays. Lopez will participate in both the 800 and 1,600 at the area meet.
Senior Elijah Methvin will also take part in two events at area. Methvin placed fourth in the shot put, tossing for 44 feet and 11.25 inches. The senior also notched a personal best in the discus throw at 147 feet and four inches to take second place.
The Rattler boys’ 4x100-meter relay team came up just 0.32 seconds short of the area cut. Seniors Mhyson Williams and Jamon Johnson and juniors Diego Cruz and Takai Madgett crossed the finish line at the 43.32-second mark, but were edged out by New Braunfels Canyon’s squad, clocking in at 43 seconds flat.
Though the team had strong performances across the board, San Marcos ended the meet with just six points, sitting in eighth place.
