SMPD identifies man arrested after witnesses see him loading gun in store parking lot

San Marcos police have identified a man arrested at a local sporting goods store after witnesses saw him loading an air pistol in the parking lot.

Jonathon Urrutia, 28, was arrested Sunday evening after police responded to Academy Sports + Outdoors  — 550 Barnes Dr. —  where he entered the store and allegedly stole three CO2 pistols.

Urrutia exited the store with the CO2 pistols, air guns that shoot pellets, and stopped near the front door where he attempted to load the weapons, police said.

The San Marcos Police Department added that witnesses called police and reported that Urrutia was in the parking lot attempting to load a gun. Store employees began evacuating customers through a rear exit, officials said. Urrutia re-entered Academy where he was stopped by an off-duty law enforcement officer not far from the entrance, SMPD said.

No injuries were reported. Urrutia was arrested and charged with aggravated robbery, terroristic threat and deadly conduct. He remains in the Hays County Jail Bond where bond has not been set at the time of publication.
